These rules do not only apply to tax professionals. These rule apply to all businesses, regardless of size, that are “significantly engaged” in providing financial products or services. This includes, for example, check-cashing businesses, payday lenders, mortgage brokers, non bank lenders, personal property or real estate appraisers, tax professionals, CPAs, and courier services. The Safeguards Rule also applies to companies like credit reporting agencies and ATM operators that receive information about the customers of other financial institutions. Cyber crime is at an all-time high, and hackers are setting their sights on small and medium businesses who are “low hanging fruit.” Don’t be their next victim!

As professionals protecting your clients information is important and it is the law. Every professional is a potential target for highly, and well-funded cyber criminals around the world. Protecting your clients is protecting yourself.

The IRS and the Summit partners urge tax pros to review the Taxes-Security-Together Checklist, including:

  • Deploy basic security measures.
  • Create a written data security plan as required by law.
  • Know about phishing and phone scams.
  • Recognize the signs of client data theft.
  • Create a data theft recovery plan.

A few good practices include; use security software, create strong passwords, secure wireless networks, and protect stored client data. Protecting taxpayer data is good business; this among many reasons are why it is imperative to review your safeguards. Securing your safeguards will protect your business as well as your clients in the long run.
