According to the IRS & FTC you must have a data security plan.

It’s the law.

These regulations require tax professionals to create and enact a written security plans to protect their client data.

These rules do not only apply to tax professionals. These rule apply to all businesses, regardless of size, that are “significantly engaged” in providing financial products or services. This includes, for example, check-cashing businesses, payday lenders, mortgage brokers, non bank lenders, personal property or real estate appraisers, tax professionals, CPAs, and courier services. The Safeguards Rule also applies to companies like credit reporting agencies and ATM operators that receive information about the customers of other financial institutions. Cyber crime is at an all-time high, and hackers are setting their sights on small and medium businesses who are “low hanging fruit.” Don’t be their next victim!
